Hello, all! Summer is upon us, and it is heating up. This is a friendly reminder that as it gets hot, to make sure pets have water and shade, and that it is important to stay hydrated when playing outside.

The pool season is in full swing, and it only costs $1 to get in!

Remember, that if you have a small pool at home, you need to dump it out immediately after use so we can keep our campus safe!

Today was great!

Thank you everyone for your help.

By the time I left we had painted in the living room and dining room. The play room was blue and the most lovely shade of orange. Pictures were hung and even the kids had gotten a chance to make us some paintings. We had a wonderful neighbor donate a dresser and a whole stack of children's books.

Our community house feels like a home. Thank you for all of your support on making it happen. You ROCK!

There are still some donations we are looking for -- specifically rugs for the rooms and kitchen, an entertainment center or tv stand, and shelving

Effectively immediately, Williams Campus Housing is offering you a chance to earn money towards your rent. If you refer a NEW applicant to Williams Campus Housing and they sign a license through JULY 31, 2010, you will receive a credit worth ½ month in FREE RENT after they move in. Each current household can earn up to two referral credits worth at total of ONE MONTH’S RENT.

Also, let your friends know that if they sign a License Agreement within 24 hours of touring the property, and that license is valid through JULY 31, 2010, we will waive the $250 security deposit. They get the opportunity to move in for only the $50 application fee (plus pet deposit, if applicable).

Reminiscing on Family Fun Day!!!

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Family Fun Day on Friday. We had a great time with you. For all you newbies, it was so great to get to know you and to everyone else it was wonderful catching up.

There is nothing greater for the team of CA's than to see such a great community come and have fun together. This is truly one of the best places to live, voted the friendliest neighborhood in the entire valley by David and Sarah Miller from West Desert Village.

Highlights of the day include Rock and Gavin laying siege to the tunnel in the obstacle course. I guess the obstacle course won't mess with those preschoolers again. They mean business! Award for fastest time on the obstacle course goes to Evan Rains. Award for slowest on the obstacle course goes to Tiffany Downey (she didn't even try). Award for coolest person in attendance goes to David Miller (close second: Will Smith). Thanks David for keeping it cool!

We hope everyone had a great time playing ping pong in the activity room over at the community house today. Special thanks to Kat and James for letting us use their ping pong table.

You might be surprised to know that the day started out with disaster! As we were setting up our canopy things outside before the event, the wind came up under them and carried them off to the land of OZ. On their way back down, they crashed into the roof and broke into unfixable pieces. Though this had the potential to ruin the day, it was so funny seeing the canopies flying halfway to the moon that we couldn't stop laughing. Needless to say, if you have a canopy tent, tie that sucker down! We learned our lesson.

We have had people ask us not to take pictures of them, and we are happy to comply. Boo Bash

Like always, we had a great turn out to Boo Bash! We were able to get ahold of more and bigger bouncies this year. We had a DJ, freshly grilled food, a lot of trunks, and one of our best haunted houses yet! Thank you to all that were able to come and be involved in the buying of supplies, setting up, decorating of trunks, cleaning up, and attending to have fun!

Breakfast for Dinner

We had a great first-time program where we all had breakfast for dinner. We all ate pancakes, eggs, and bacon, and played guitar hero. Fun was had by all including too many mosquitoes. Thanks for everyone that came out and we hope you all enjoyed a night off of cooking!

Move In

Move in was a busy day for us, as all freshman enter their college experience as well as all the returners who moved away for the summer. It took a lot of work to organize and prepare for this big day and all of the office staff did an excellent job in all that they did to put it all together. We learned many important things about protocols, recognizing, documenting, engaging, listening, and the list goes on and on and on. Venezuelan Black Beans and Rice

(approx. cook time = 35 minutes)

Ingredients 1 tablespoon Oil1 Onion, chopped 1 stick Celery, diced 1 Red Capsicum (Sweet pepper), seeded and chopped225g/8oz long-grain white Rice420ml/14fl. oz. Vegetable Stock1 teaspoon Ground Turmeric 1 teaspoon Dried Oregano 1 teaspoon Salt 400g/14oz Cooked Black Beans1 teaspoon Chili Powder

Instructions

1. Heat the oil in a medium saucepan, add the onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes, stirring.
2. Add the celery, capsicum and rice and continue to cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring.
3. Reduce the heat to low, add the stock, turmeric, oregano and salt, mix well, cover and cook for 15-20 minutes or until rice is tender and the liquid absorbed. Remove from heat and fluff with fork.
4. Meanwhile, put the black beans in another saucepan with a little water and cook over a low heat, stirring from time to time, until heated through.
5. Once the rice is cooked, add the drained black beans and incorporate well. Sprinkle with chili pepper when serving.

Taste of Latin America Recipes

Vitamina is a delicious and wholesome drink that is made by mixing and pureeing fruit in a blender. In English, it would be called milkshake or smoothie. Milk (vitamina de leite ) or orange juice (vitamina de laranja ) is added to make it more liquid. The combination of fruit depends on the season and on the taste of the cook. Vitaminas are often drunk at breakfast or as a snack. For Brazilians, vitaminas are part of the everyday routine and it is probably for this reason that these drinks are simply forgotten by many resources on Brazilian cuisine.
Some recipes:
Vitamina de Goiaba (Vitamina of Guava) Mix 100 gr (3.5 oz) of guava , 3 spoons of condensed milk, 150 ml (0.31 pints) of water, some drops of lime juice and mint to taste. Mix and puree in a blender. Serve directly in a large glass.
Vitamina de Abacate (Vitamina of Avocado) Unlike other Latin-Americans, Brazilians do not eat avocado with salt but with sugar! Vitamina de Abacate is a delicious, Brazilian way to use avocado. Peel a small avocado, remove the seed and cut it in small cubes. Mix and puree with ½ liter (2.1 pints) of milk and sugar to taste in a blender. This is enough for two large glasses. Serve directly.
Vitamina de Mamão e Laranja (Vitamina of Papaya and Orange) Put 1 cup of papaya, ½ cup of orange juice, 1 cup of milk, a few drops of lime juice and sugar to taste in a blender. Mix and puree and serve directly in two large glasses.
Vitamina de Açaí (Vitamina of Açaí) Native to the Amazon rain forest, the açaí berries have become tremendously popular in other Brazilian regions in a short period. The açaí palm grows well on farms outside the Amazon region and it is probably a matter of time until this wonderful fruit becomes available outside Brazil. Vitamina de Açai is made by mixing açaí berries, sugar, cassava (manioc) flour and milk to taste in a blender. Serve directly.

Recipes from Peru (was not served)

Potatoes Huancaina

2 pounds potatoes, 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1/2 sliced onion, 1 romaine lettuce, 1/2 tablespoon yellow chili, 1 cup cottage cheese, 6 black olives, 2 oz grated cheese, 1/2 cup skim milk, 2 tablespoons chopped parsley

Cover the potatoes with water in a large saucepan, bring to a boil and cook until tender. Drain and cool then cut into rounds. In a non stick skillet, warm the olive oil over medium heat then add onion and chili and cook for 5 minutes. Put the onion, grated cheese and cottage cheese into a blender and puree until smooth.Arrange lettuce leaves on plates. Put potato slices on top of the lettuce and pour sauce over them. Top with an olive.

Recipe from Ecuador (was not served)

Potato Cakes (Llapingachos)

INGREDIENTS: 2 pounds potatoes-peeled and sliced, salt- 4 tablespoons, (1/4 cup) butter, 2 medium onions- finely chopped, 2 cups Munster cheese- shredded, lard, butter, or oil, or annatto lard or oil

Boil the potatoes in salted water until soft. Drain and mash. Heat the butter in a skillet and saute the onions until they are very soft. Add the onions to the mashed potatoes, mixing well. Shape the potatoes into 12 balls. Divide the cheese into 12 parts and stuff each of the potato balls with the cheese, flattening them as you do so into cakes or patties about 1 inch thick. Chill in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes. In enough lard, butter, or oil (with or without annatto as you please) to cover the bottom of a skillet, saute the potato cakes until they are golden brown on both sides. The onions may be omitted, or the potato may be mixed with the cheese instead of the cheese being used as a stuffing.

Cheese Sauce (Aji de Queso)

1 large tomato, peeled, seeded, and coarsely chopped, 1 fresh hot red or green pepper, 1/2 pound Spanish fresh cheese (queso blanco or queso fresco) or ricottasalt, freshly ground pepper, 1 medium onion, finely chopped, 1 hard boiled egg, chopped

In a blender or food processor combine the tomato, pepper, and cheese and reduce to a puree. Be careful not to over blend. Season to taste with salt and pepper and put into a bowl. Sprinkle with the onion and egg. Serve as a sauce with potatoes and cooked green vegetables.

Barbacoa from Mexico

8-10 lbs brisket meat

1 pk mixed spices (Mohave brand) *take out cloves and cinnamon sticks, 1 pk New Mexico chile powder (Mohave brand), 1 head of garlic, 1 pinch of oregano, 1 Tbs vinegar, 1 medium brown onion, 2 Tbs salt or to desired taste

Blend onion and chile powder and salt together with water, until you get a puree. Place brisket, spices and garlic in slow cooker. Add blended puree and water to adjusted height of slow cooker. Put timer on high for 6 hours. After time, pull meat out and pull meat apart making into a shredded meat serving and put back into slow cooker so meat can absorb juices. A Night at the Leadership Banquet

Some of the RAs were able to attend this year's Leadership Banquet at the Polytechnic campus last Friday. We had several RAs that received recognition and presented awards. We have some pictures of us enjoying our meals and company and of some RAs getting their awards. All of our RAs are leaders on campus, but on this night it was nice to see some getting rewarded for their leadership.

Relay for Life was on the 18th and 19th this year. We had a few team members stay the whole time which was from 6 at night till 6 in the morning. Our team sold pulled pork, slaw, beans, and water and sodas. We made over $400 and we hoping to keep adding to the cause.

North Res Halls Car Wash Update

NRHs had a car wash on Saturday the 5th to raise money for Relay for Life. They had at least 15 cars come out and they raised over $150!! Great job guys!!! Take Back the Night Recap

Polytechnic's second annual Take Back the Night was held on April 3rd, and was a wonderful event. It is estimated that we had over 75 people at one point. The event is held to bring awareness to social issues such as domestic violence and sexual assault. There were many different educational resources and groups as well as speakers, a march, and a candle-light opportunity to talk about what we learned, felt, and hope for in our futures. It was a very enlightening and moving experience for all who came. We encourage everyone to come out to our 3rd annual next year! Here are pictures of the event.

Earth Hour

Earth Hour is on March 29th from 8pm-9pm. All of ASU's residential areas are participating in this, so please note. This is a voluntary activity for residents on campus. Essential security and services will NOT be included.

Here is some background information on Earth Hour:

In 2007, the city of Sydney, Australia, turned off their lights for one hour to symbolize the power of collective action and how it can affect positive change for our environment. Started by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the event turned into a world-wide phenomenon. More than 2.2 million turned off their lights in Australia, sparking media coverage and raising awareness about this important issue.

This year, WWF is taking the event worldwide and Phoenix has been chosen to be one of only four U.S. Cities to participate. On the night of March 29th, the downtowns in Phoenix, Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco – along with a host of cities around the globe – will turn off their lights from 8 pm to 9 pm local time. (Essential services/security will not be included)

Community House Re-opening BBQ Pictures and Feedback

We had a great turn out to our Community House BBQ! We loved having the chance to get to know our neighbors and discussing our great plans for use of the community house. We are planning on doing a program there at least once a week and we would love to hear any ideas that you might have. It could be something large scale or even small like watching a t.v. show together. We are really excited to use the house more and we hope that everyone else is as well. Please leave us some feedback on the program whether good or bad. If you leave us a comment anywhere on the blog along with some kind of contact information, you could win a prize! Spring Fling!!!

We had our Spring Fling event on Saturday, March 1st. Spring Fling is one of our larger programs and also our large fundraiser for our Relay for Life team. Relay for Life is a program that raises funds for The American Cancer Society and cancer research. The actual Relay for Life event is in April. There are several teams that all try to raise money for the cause and our housing team is called the Wild Willies. All of the proceeds from Spring Fling go to our team's contributions to Relay. This year we were able to raise about $250.00.

Thank you to all of those who came out to the event. We had a lot of fun activities. It was held at the track and we had a lot of things to do. We had a ton of field games including playing with a large ball, a water spoon relay, a rain gutter boat race, rug of war, and many other activities. We also had a great DJ as well as some live entertainment from a band here on campus. We had an old-fashioned lemonade stand that the children could work at where we sold pickles, popsicles, and lemonade, of course. We held pie eating contests along with cupcake contests for the little ones. We had chance drawings and sold Papa Johns pizza along with soda and water. Chic-fil-a came out to our event with sandwiches for sale as well as the prize wheel. The housing office staff had a tent where people could do renewals and lock in a cheaper rate on their license agreements.

It was a beautiful day, and we had a great time. We appreciate all of the volunteers and anyone who came out to Spring Fling and we hope everyone can make it out to next year's event as well. We put together a slide show with pictures from set-up and throughout the event. Today is National Nothing Day, an event created by newspaperman Harold Pullman Coffin and first observed in 1973 "to provide Americans with one national day when they can just sit without celebrating, observing or honoring anything." Day Two and Three of RA Training

Day two and three of RA training was held in one of the ballrooms at the Polytechnic campus. We learned and worked all day from morning to night on building our teams, defining our clear purpose, customer service, programming, and the list goes on and on. Here are some pictures of both days. We all really learned a lot and are excited to start out a new year with new found motivation and plenty of ideas!

RA Winter Training Kicked Off!

On Wednesday morning all of the Polytechnic RAs met together at the Housing Office to kick off our winter training. We carpooled to the Tempe Campus and attended an all-day training full of networking and a variety of learning sessions including: new program ideas, the color code, interactive bulletin boards, balancing busyness and spirituality, using the right brain, recycling and many other topics. Report on Winterfest

We had a great turn out for Winterfest this year! Thank you to everyone who made it out! We spent the evening around the fire, roasting marshmallows for smores and drinking hot chocolate and apple cider with cookies and croissants. There was music, crafts, and we can't forget...SANTA. He spent a lot of time with our community, talking, joking, and sharing goody bags and star cookie cutters. Some children were happy to see him and some others were not so sure.

Some people forgot to bring their cameras to the event, and one of our RAs offered to take some pictures on her camera. She tried to do the best she could, hopefully everyone was able to get at least one good picture with Santa. The slide show is on the bottom of the page. Feel free to save any of the pictures that are of you and your family.

Williams Campus Housing

In regards to coyote sightings on campus:

Please remember that coyotes are a part of our natural environment and have been here for many years. They are protected by law, so we do not try to trap or intervene in their activities unless they attack a human or cause property damage.

Do not feed any house pets outside or leave food/water out for them. This includes cat food intended for wild cats on campus. If you see a coyote you should yell and waive your arms in order to run it off. We do this so the coyote will fear us, and hopefully steer clear of human contact, which they have done thus far. The coyote will leave campus if we as a community make it hard for them to find food. Furthermore, outside feeding of any animal(s) owned or roaming free is strictly prohibited by the pet addendum of your license agreement. This means that all water and food for authorized animals must remain indoors at all times.

Lastly, animal control will not respond for a coyote unless we have it contained, or it has attacked someone. So please do not ask ASU dispatch to call them out for one running through campus. Do your best to encourage the animal to keep on going.

Turkey Bowl II Report

Despite the last minute change to our location, we had a great turn out for our second annual Turkey Bowl this year. We had two fields prepared and packed with players. We are planning to increase the amount of fields for next year's Turkey Bowl due to some requests. We enjoyed plenty of donuts, hot chocolate, Gatorade, and most importantly the company of our neighbors. Some wonderful spectators took pictures of the fun and shared them with us, so we would like to share them with you. If you ever have any pictures of events that you attended and enjoyed, please share them with us!! We love to see and hear feedback from you! Thank you to all of those you attended this year's Turkey Bowl and we hope to see many more people and their families come out to next years event as well!

Turkey Bowl II Change

The location of our Turkey Bowl II has been changed from the field at the track to the grassy area by the flagpole. It is behind the round about at the entrance of campus. We will have signs posted at the track to let people know of the change. You can park at the visitor's parking over by the Union or you can park in the Tech building parking which is closer. Hope you see you there!!

Bee Movie Cancelled

Due to an underwhelming lack of response, we will not be providing The Bee Movie this upcoming Monday, November 19th. We apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused. It comes down to whether or not we have enough people to support the events that we plan and this was happened to fall short in numbers. BOO BASH has come and gone

Boo Bash was held on Saturday, October 27th this year. We had a great turn out and plenty of spooky fun. It was a lot of work to put it all together but we all got through it alive. We hope that everyone who came and participated had a memorable time and enjoyed themselves. The RAs and staff plan for Boo Bash for many, many months and would love to hear any feedback that you might have to share with us. Positive feedback is always nice, but we understand that we are not perfect so if you think we could have done something differently, please share so we can try to make changes. We hope you had fun at Boo Bash as well as on Halloween night! Thanks for coming and participating in the fun!
